Hong Kong HAS A RAT PROBLEM

Hong Kong has a growing rodent problem, from the Central Districts to the outer areas of the New Territories we have seen the rapid rise in mice, rats and other rodents feasting on restaurant waste, green groceries market foods detritus and scraps. We see them from wet markets to in residential buildings at night scurrying up and down the stairwells in search for waste that has not been effectively removed, or has been left beside the waste collection points.

It is not since the vast plague numbers of the 1960’s that we have seen rodents back in our city at their current numbers and magnitude, whilst we support the government’s current efforts to reduce the number of these vermin and stop this issue from magnifying, we do have issue with the inhumane and often grotesque “Glue Traps” and “Rodent Baits” that are being using to control them.

STAND WITH US IN BANNING GLUE TRAPS

This has caused the rise in “Glue Traps” all across the territory, due to the low cost of this method, we are seeing these being used more and more in a wider range of places, such as warehouses, storage sheds, wholesale export yards, even inside of shipping containers prior to shipping.

It is globally known that “Glue Traps”, kill wildlife indiscriminately. They effect pets, wildlife, as well as having a health and hygiene impact on the human animal (or “Poison Bait” & “Glue Trap”) handlers, to the point that many overseas developed countries such as Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand and even parts of Australia and the United States have banned the possession and use of “Glue Traps”. This is due to their inhumane ways that the target rodents die – slowly, painfully, and often ripping its own skin from its living body, and it can take hours, or even days for the animal to die of starvation or blood loss from attempting to “chew its own limbs off to escape”. Countries such as Iceland, New Zealand, and Wales have prohibited the use and sale of “Glue Traps”.
